You see, "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, translated as "Christ". The "-mas" part is an old English (I believe) way of saying "Mass".
Its lazy, but its also culturally accurate.
Christians classically have referred to Christ with the letters XP or Xt (by "classically", I mean "for at least a thousand years") in text. The Greek word for 'Christ' is Χριστος, so the XP came to stand for the Greek letters chi and rho. Millions of Christians, from Orthodox traditions to Protestants, use what they call the chirho or the labarum as a symbol for Jesus. The chirho/labarum is considered to be a symbol equivalent to the fish, or the cross.
Here's Wikipedia's example of a labarum.
Calling the holiday "X-mas" is the exact same thing as calling it "Christmas". It's only been within the last fifty years that Christians, eager for proof that they are being persecuted in a country where they are a supermajority, claimed that anyone who calls it "X-mas" is trying to X Jesus out.
So, really, all this stamp shows is that you don't know anything about the history of your own religion.
wow, thanks for all the info!
I didn't know any of this
By the way, I'm very sorry if I came off as sounding hostile. I'm used to getting nasty comments when I tell people about the origins of using X instead of "Christ" in writing. Thanks for understanding.
